Bog 7

Annotations: I believe that I improved in my annotations, but I feel like I annotate better when I have a goal put in front of me. I would prefer to have a prom or main focus to annotate towards.

Surrounding context: Yo-Yo Ma is a cellist and songwriter who attended the Juilliard School and Harvard University. He published “Necessary Edges: Art, Empathy, and Education” on the World Post, which was launched in January of 2014 in Davos, Switzerland. He advocates for the art into STEM, which then becomes STEAM.

Circumstantial context: I do not personally believe that art and music are a requirement. Throughout high school I participated in the minimum art and music classes. I do not believe they are essential in every person’s learning. I do believe that some people it may be a better fit for, but I am not one of those people. The purpose for reading this essay is to provide information on another perspective of STEM and to bring upon new ideas toward it.

Intentional context: To put art into the curriculum can allow certain people to learn that they can work better with this material and learn different skills. In his essay it mentions how kids can express themselves at school, which links to what I have said above. He thinks it will lead kids to want to go to school instead of being “forced” into it.

It’s wise to acknowledge the important role a goal can have on one’s annotating habits. I recommend revisiting the text with your current working thesis in mind. This can help the text come alive in new ways.
